There are two options: the Echo Meter Touch 2 for hobbyists and the new and improved Echo Meter Touch 2 PRO for professional ecologists and serious bat workers. What if you do already own a compatible iOS device? Well, then it's a "no-brainer" (as they say) - If the cost of an Echo Meter Touch is in your considered budget - Then, the choice is simple: Go for it! We found that, for the species common in our area, such as Common Pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus pipistrellus), Soprano Pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus pygmaeus) and the Noctule ( Nyctalus noctule), the auto-ID feature appeared mostly accurate. Although, on one occasion before dusk we found that a bird call triggered a Common Pipistrelle identification. It is important to note that no Auto-ID feature can be 100% accurate, and Wildlife Acoustics make it clear that users should always manually verify the identification.

Once installed/set-up - The Echo Meter Touch is truly, very easy to use. Operation of the iPad application is intuitive, and I found it to be a spontaneous, and fun learning experience! The layout of the application's buttons and Menu choices are all conveniently implemented. No one will ever be able to accuse the EM Touch application of being convoluted, or difficult to get acclimated to. It all seems to flow very naturally during normal use; this is a big plus while in the field. IMPORTANT! We have noticed that there is a mistake - rather an important one. Figure 7.3 is supposed to show the minimum frequencies (Fmin) of FM/CF bats but what it actually shows is the frequency containing maximum energy (fMaxE). Although The EM Touch may be even smaller than the average Hobbyist's detector - It is a device several magnitudes more capable than a typical bat enthusiast's detector. So just how accurate are the identifications given by this bat detector kit? The short answer is you get an accurate ID about 80% of the time. But the more complete answer is that it depends on two factors: the species and the Auto ID Sensitivity setting you use during recording.
