About this deal

It is a quaint hotel that is barely breathing, with the opening of a newer, more modern hotel nearby, complete with ensuite bathrooms and a highly-rated chef as the owner.

This takes you through the nitty gritty bits of keeping one running in the 1960s when en suite rooms were yet an emerging trend. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. Although this is a standalone novel I think personally I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous novel(s) with some of the same characters. Having been born in the 60’s a lot of things reminded me of my young days, no bathroom’s indoors, I remember staying in hotels when on holiday as we were growing up and none of them had en suite facilities.Although you could say this book is historical, the 1960s could be seen to be by some, for me it is more a reflection on how women’s roles were changing and that in some cases, women are still seen to be so far behind their male counterparts.

When her back story was finally revealed I loved her even more and would happily read an entire book about her life during the war (hint hint). She did take me way out of my writing comfort zone, setting a book in France when I couldn’t go there, for a start, but I loved living in her world. As I've said in my reviews of the previous books in this 'series', the historical setting works well for Katie Fforde's genre of romance which almost always features an artistic, slightly virginal (ie either a virgin or only ever had one lover, possible a deceased husband) young woman, and a taciturn man who turns out to have been secretly in love with her all the time. Being set in the 1960s it meant that some of the character's views were very off compared with today and I thought it was great to see how attitudes have mostly changed. I believe falling in love is the best thing in the world, and I want all my characters to experience it, and my readers to share their stories. Her relationship with Meg was delightful and very special which made the story even better and it was wonderful to catch up with characters from past books.
