It really is amazing what Andy is doing, it makes it look like it happened yesterday and now we're getting to see what things really looked like, versus what we thought they looked like - almost like going from black and white to color! Andy is without a doubt the leading expert on that golden age of spaceflight thanks to his work on digitally restoring and deciphering the stories behind 50 year old NASA images. He has spent years restoring images from every single crewed Apollo mission and collating them into an incredible collection. It brought back many memories of my time during the missions - an incredible book that will surely be enjoyed for many generations to come. After five decades, it's very rare that something comes along from Apollo that genuinely surprises me.
Not only has Andy done a remarkable job bringing more details to light, but his incredible work has also created a lot of public excitement. This allows us to consider questions and potential answers not previously even possible, thanks to the advances in technology and his inspiring work. Punctured with crisp whites and an unbelievable amount of visual detail - they wouldn’t look out of place in a movie like Interstellar or Gravity. It's big to begin with, over 6lbs (I know that because I read the super-confusing section on cameras in space at the end). The result are large, fantastic images of space, the Earth and the Moon that are close to what the astronauts would have actually seen. Each Apollo mission gets its own chapter, with an introductory page about the astronauts, the mission and the photography (it isn't just 'here are some photos', it's a book about photography in space), then you get the shots.
Each print is a large-format photographic print and should be handled with extreme care; ideally with cotton gloves to avoid transfer of oils.
Apollo Remastered was first released in the UK by Particular Books (Penguin Random House) in September 2022, and in the U. Later the same year his imaging work and analysis helped to solve one of NASA’s most enduring mysteries, by determining the most likely cause of the sinking of Gus Grissom’s Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft, 60 years after the world’s 3rd spaceflight; finally vindicating Grissom.
