About this deal

Why DJI called these the Goggles 2 when they already have a Goggles V2 is beyond us, but it seems destined to confuse DJI’s customers.

The max flight speed is subject to dynamic local restrictions. Please abide by local laws and regulations when flying. Does not come with a standard controller, only motion controller. DJI Avata is also compatible with DJI FPV Remote Controller Similarly, all the modes are a little slower than its predecessor, with 'Normal' mode only offering 8m/s and sport mode 14m/s. And, climbing is capped at just 6m/s irrespective of mode, where the FPV had no limit on climb rate in manual mode and 15m/s in Sport. These commercial flying machines were initially born as a tool for travellers and photographers to take better footage of their trips, but people soon understood how useful these machines could be in almost any aspect of our lives. Drone applications are endless for businesses, and we’re not far from the point when we’re going to wonder how we ever lived without drones in our daily lives. The eyepieces include diopter adjustment to set focus to match corrective lenses and an adjustable pupillary distance. These adjustments do a great job, but if you have strong visual astigmatism, for instance, you won’t ever really see a clear image. The connection between the drone and the Goggles 2 is Ocusync O3+, the latest version of DJI’s transmission technology. Depending on what region you are flying, O3+ can provide a video and control link at up to 10km, or only 2km if you are based in Europe. Lastly, the Avata has a reasonable amount of internal storage, about 20GB, which is enough to hold around 20 minutes of 4K60FPS footage. The quadcopter supports a MicroSD slot, but finally, DJI made a drone with more internal storage than just 8GB. Design and Controller

The firm's engineering teams deserve an incredible amount of credit for making a small, high-speed drone that's very easy to unbox and fly. The Avata hovers in place when your hand is off the throttle, moves through the air effortlessly, and is extremely responsive to controls (enough so that 30mph flights through complex environments are possible). Racing pros can swap to a manual controller for 60mph flight too, though I wasn't brave enough to try this mode—I don't have the skills for flying quadcopters without autopilot assists. The inclusion of blade rings is also a significant advantage if the drone ever hits living things, even though the 410g Avata is much lighter than the 795g DJI FPV. One complaint I have about the Motion Controller is the position of the Record button. It's on the left side, essentially under where your thumb rests, and reacts to glancing presses. It's very easy to bump while flying. The FPV goggles show a tally icon during recordings, but it's easy to miss when you're concentrating on flying fast and avoiding crashes. The Avata has a setting to automatically record while it's flying, but even with that on, an accidental tap of the Record button ends recording. DJI should offer an option to disable the Record button altogether to prevent recording interruptions. Using the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, as we did on many of our flights, is more intuitive for experienced drone pilots. When combined with the excellent view provided by the Goggles 2 and the agility of the Avata, it provided for easy precision flying and a high degree of exhilaration as we cruised low to the ground or between tree tops. In short, flying the Avata is a blast.DJI Goggles 2 does not support astigmatism correction. If you have specific vision requirements, please consult your doctor before use. A touch-sensitive panel, located just ahead of your right temple, supports swipe and tap gestures for navigation. In the menus, you can adjust video settings, set a custom geofence, and access the useful post-crash Turle Mode option, which flips the drone right side up after a crash landing. Where the FPV topped out at an impressive 87mph (140 kph) in 'Manual' mode, the Avata is limited to just 27m/s or 60mph (97.2 kph). The DJI FPV flew at this speed in 'Sport' mode, so the Avata is significantly slower.

The DJI Avata is all about capturing immersive video, capturing in 4K up to 60FPS, 2.7K up to 100FPS, and 1080p up to 100FPS with DJI Goggle 2.The Avata has a nose-mounted camera for both FPV viewing and video capture. The lens has a wide view of 12mm in full-frame terms, and it’s a Type 1/1.7-inch with an F2.8 lens and boasts 64% more surface area to capture light than the ½.3-inch sensor of its predecessor. A bigger sensor means better low-light condition photos, but it also provides an improved dynamic range if you choose to shoot in D-Cinelike. As humans don’t come with consistently-specced eyes, the Goggles 2 allows for both a degree of optical adjustment along with Interpupillary Distance changes. The screen refresh rate changes with the video transmission frame rate. It may switch between 100 Hz and 60 Hz to adapt to the current video transmission frame rate. Does not come with a charger. You can use your own USB-C charger. It is recommended to use the DJI 65W Portable Charger (sold separately), DJI 65W Car Charger (sold separately), or other USB PD chargers.
