About this deal

zoom with a focal range of 70-200mm is an excellent complement to a 24-70mm standard zoom on an FX body. The center never disappoints throughout the focal range but the corners need some stopping down for good performance at focal lengths above 130mm. Focus shift, the center of the depth of field shifting forward or, more commonly, backward as the aperture narrows is not an issue with this lens.

Multi-Layer coatings have also been applied to banish flare and ghosting, which in turn should help to keep contrast high, while an impressive 11 diaphragm blades should help to keep bokeh looking natural. The pincushion distortion gradually increases until becoming moderately strong at 135mm and very slightly stronger by 200mm. I am mostly interested in nature photography (landscape, wildlife, closeups) and travel photography (landscape, architecture, portraits). Stop down to f/4 and these mid focal lengths become very sharp while showing slight peripheral improvement at f/5.That this tripod foot extends forward with a rounded front helps to circumvent this problem by providing a palm rest, but a rear-positioned zoom ring works best. It seems to be built like a tank; it does not extend while zooming or focusing, so that this lens is very nice to use. What follows are near-center results (first column) followed by DX-corner results and FX-corner results on a D800. Spherical aberration along with spherochromatism, or a change in the amount of spherical aberration with respect to color (looks quite similar to axial chromatic aberration, but is hazier) are other common lens aberrations to look for. This includes the Sigma's TC-1401 and TC-200 teleconverters, which boost the effective focal range to 98-280mm and 140-400mm respectively, as well as the USB Dock that allows firmware to be updated and both AF and image stabilisation to be tweaked.

Build quality of this lens seems very good: Our sample worked very smoothly, both zooming and focusing, with no play, wobble, or looseness in any of its controls.

In addition to the highest levels of optical performance and photographic expression, SIGMA’s new Sports line of lenses offers the kind of action-capture performance that precisely executes the intentions of the photographer. From an early stage in the lens design process, flare and ghosting have been measured to establish an optical design resistant to strong incident light sources such as backlighting. Infinity and long distance focusing are sacrificed with an extension tube in use, but some modest maximum magnification increase can be realized using extension tubes behind this lens.

No longer is an accessory plate necessary for attaching this lens to Arca-compatible clamp and the lack of an accessory plate enables a more compact lens. DG OS HSM | Sports lens, the company has completed a trinity that covers the full 14-200mm range without once dipping below a maximum f/2. Meanwhile, chromatic aberrations and distortions are negligible, and there’s very good resistance to ghosting and flare. Regardless of relative body weight, the balance is such that relatively little torque is applied to the tripod's mounting threads.Because of the usefulness and popularity of this lens class, most of the larger lens manufacturers have a stabilized 70-200mm f/2. A 70-200mm lens is my most-used studio lens, working especially well for product images and many other general studio applications.
