Definitely a book I would have liked as a kid and would recommend to all the Muslim kids who want to see themselves in a book. That's the question that photographer and traveller Samantha Brown pondered on a ten month, socially distanced journey in 2020. And I also love how communication was the main factor, and seeing their parents actually communicate was refreshing because it’s definitely something not a lot of us grew up with, but something I hope the younger generation gets to experience. He is the author of The Oak Papers (2020), Ancient Wonderings: Journeys into Prehistoric Britain (2017) and Out of Essex: Re-Imagining a Literary Landscape (2013), which was inspired by his rural wanderings in East Anglia. Her prescriptions here, delivered with kindness, are as ancient as they are new, and filled with the spirit of rebirth. But ultimately this is a matter of personal taste, and even I, with my cynic’s eye and ear, was drawn into a book that felt like the kind of easy-going conversation about old ways between old places that might be had with a friend on a long country walk.

Ruth is a keen occasional-adventurer when she has the time and in 2018 ran the length of the Bosnian Dinaric Alps solo and unsupported. Speaking of natures strengths to ground you as your negotiating your way through the mess of the world we life in. That said there was still a lot of wisdom I took from this book and it is one I will certainly be dipping into many many times. What I really liked about this book is that the author has successfully managed to combine the gravitas of a 'serious' book with the light touch of an illustrated 'coffee table' book.

Whether you choose to read this from cover-to-cover, or dip into a specific topic, or even just read a page or two at a time, ‘Grounded’ works well to explain the therapeutic benefits of the natural environment. And perhaps that's where the strength of this book lies, in it's ability to be picked up when there is a feeling of disconnect and to offer up some guidance. There is a birthday that is celebrated with everyone singing, and possible triggers of talking about a deceased parent. Told in alternating points of view, Grounded tells the story of one unexpected night that will change these kids forever. A qualified outdoor counsellor/psychotherapist, she specialises in outdoor practice, nature connection, and the power of relationship.
