About this deal

His debut book, ‘It’s Always Summer Somewhere’, a memoir on a life lived through the love of cricket and music while processing young grief, is a Sunday Times Bestseller and has received widespread praise and plaudits from revered names across the arts and sports worlds, including Stephen Fry, Pete Paphides and Toby Jones. It’s insightful, and beautifully written, and that well-quoted line from Wandavision really came to mind when reading it. I laughed and cried and like Felix cricket has been a part of my life (for over fifty years) Cricket is so often a metaphor for life and can be a tremendous force for good (check out cricketwithoutboundarie.

It is a tale of desperate chances and impossible triumphs, an adventure story of a girl who beat the odds and grew up to become one of the most legendary artists of her time, turning adversity and hopelessness into timeless music. I’ve never written a book review before, but felt compelled to do so for Felix White’s wonderful autobiographical book.

I was gifted this book as I have been a maccabees fan since the very beginning and I was very excited to read it. The cricket links and the painful impact of supporting Englands cricket team is eminently relatable. With unprecedented access to the artist’s entire archive, The Quentin Blake Book reveals the stories behind some of Blake’s most famous creations, while also providing readers with an intimate insight into the unceasing creativity of this remarkable artist. For example, the lessons about life you can take from Alan Wells and the other snippet interviews with Tuffers, Trott etc are intertwined nicely into the book. It's in such a tender way that Felix tells his story of loss - so perceptively intertwined are the passions that nourish him and the lovely, loopy game that he can't look away from.

Robert Westall grew up on Tyneside during the 1930s and 40s, the only child of remarkable parents and grandparents. Culminating in the heart-stopping World Cup Final in 2019, the book finally answers that question fans have so often asked… what is it about this game? His passion for the game is at the fore on the BBC's number one cricket podcast and 5Live show, 'Tailenders,' which he co-presents with Greg James and Jimmy Anderson. White is an erudite author… and his passion for music and cricket, and his love for friends and family are evident in his writing. A friend recommended this book and I listened to the audio version, surprised at how much I loved it. It isn’t a sad book by any means though and I loved his tails of his early love of cricket and getting to love his guitar. However it is only in the final few chapters that I gained the sense that he feels content and I hope he does.Felix encapsulates what cricket means to so many, and despite it being a sport which can be baffling to a neutral and engrossing to those who know, his words show a love for the game. Articulate, intensely personal at times and a beautiful reflection of life’s trials, tribulations and personal neuroses. And if you are a cricket fan (especially an England cricket fan) you will be able to relate to so much of what is said - the lows and, indeed, the highs. The way Felix touches on both the comedic and tragic elements of the sport through descriptions of his 'cricket cave' hit close to home at points. And, through the prism of her extraordinary experiences, she offers vital insights into the nature of race, class, feminism, sexuality and ageing in modern Britain.
