About this deal

It is a gypsy tradition that has been taking place since 1685, with travellers coming to bathe their horses in the River Eden. The ultimate hidden gem consisting of a crystal clear rock pool ideal for wild swimmers can be found via a wild swim down the river to the small hamlet of Whale. Its judicial functions ceased in late 20th century and, after refurbishment, now used for business premises. Appleby’s principal role from 12th century was as market centre for upper Eden valley, with important cattle fairs every fortnight from Whitsuntide to Michaelmas, held on the Sands.

A walk up the picturesque main street of Boroughgate, described as 'one of the finest in England', can transport you back into Medieval England with the peace and quiet of beautiful riverside walks and picnic areas within five minutes of the town centre. A climbing session on a mountain crag or rocky outcrop is one way to keep fit, and challenge yourself. You can enjoy traditional a ‘pub grub’ lunch or dinner including Cumberland Sausage alongside a pint of hand pulled ale. At the rescheduled 2021 fair, police noted that, with 13 arrests, it was the "worst level of fair-related offending in Appleby since 2014.

No one likes leaving their dog at home when they go away, so finding dog friendly accommodation is always a relief. The banks of Lacy Caves just past Little Salkeld is a great spot, complete with towers of rocks ideal for jumping from! On the south side of the building, there’s a quatrefoil plaque inscribed with 1179, to commemorate Appleby’s first written charter, and above this is a pretty bellcote on the gable. Some vibrant walks to explore near Appleby include the Acorn Bank woodland and the riverbanks of Hoff Beck and the River Eden. In 2021, Shera Rom Billy Welch warned Home Secretary Priti Patel that the event was threatened by the proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, stating that if the bill was enforced, police could confiscate the homes of Gypsies and Travellers if, upon complaint of local residents, they did not immediately move on.

Walks around Appleby’s nearby gardens and woodland provide endless opportunities to spot new wildlife and blooms including bluebells, snowdrops and daffodils. In addition to classes and exhibits, there are a variety of stands, children’s entertainment and a craft tent.New town consisted of wide, planned street of Boroughgate with its own parish church of St Lawrence; earlier settlement of Appleby lay across River Eden in St Michael’s parish, in Bongate (literally ‘the street of the peasants or unfree tenants’), referred to in 1276 as ‘old Appleby where the villeins dwell’ – it was not within area granted borough status by Henry II 1179.
