About this deal

Graham Smith eloquently sets out the irrefutable logic for abolishing the monarchy and paints a picture of a better, more democratic future for our country. Due to French intervention under Napoleon III, the Second Mexican Empire lasted from 1864 to 1867, when it collapsed and its Emperor, Maximilian I of Mexico, was executed.

The death of Elizabeth, the subsequent ‘tone deaf’ coronation and the underwhelming performance of the monarchy at immense public expense makes this an ideal time to prepare our constitutional arrangements to be ‘fit for purpose’ for the twenty-first century and beyond. He failed and in turn he himself was overthrown, leading to the Portuguese installation of Mavura Mhande Felipe on the throne. I bought the book because I am a member of Republic but felt that I should at least make the effort to read it although unlikely to be persuaded by the arguments therein.

The accession of King Charles has fundamentally changed the monarchy and the public’s relationship with it. Regardless, why would them (plus Australia and NZ) changing to republics require the abolition of our own royalty ? As Pakistanis struggle with the reality of climate collapse, it’s clear that the legacy of empire is an ongoing disaster for many. A spokesperson for Clarence House, the King’s London residence for nearly 20 years, said they were “working urgently to identify alternative roles for the greatest possible number of staff”.

Smith quotes a number of countries that have shed their royalty (or equivalent), but the list has omitted, for example, Greece, Italy, Romania and Russia. The remainder of the country, however, was under a form of indirect rule under him through its division into over 500 subnational monarchies, known as princely states; each was ruled by a prince who acknowledged the suzerainty of the Indian Emperor. With the abolition of the Japanese aristocracy and cadet branches of the imperial family, the Korean royals officially lost their remaining status. The only formerly communist country to have held a referendum on the monarchy was Albania, where the claimant to his father's throne, the self-styled Leka I, lost by a 2/3 majority.Communists in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania removed their monarchies with strong backing by the Soviet Union, which had many troops and supporters placed there during the course of the war.

In every case it was obvious the reviewer had never read the book at all and had just decided that Smith must have ignored all these classic arguments (because they’re so strong, right? Our country suffers greatly from inequality – that is, from ordinary people getting shafted while the rich and powerful get away with whatever they want. Abolition of absolutist monarchy in favor of limited government under constitutional monarchy is a less radical form of anti-royalism that has succeeded in some nations that still retain monarchs, such as Sweden, Spain, and Thailand. In 1924, the Mongolian People's Republic was established, bringing an end to the monarchy in Mongolia. For the purposes of transparency, I’ll state that I’ve been anti-monarchist for my entire adult life. You must read this, but you'll weep for our supposed democracy, and never trust an establishment news story again. When I was writing this, the Republic team were busy staging a demonstration inside Buckingham Palace. He had fallen foul of the British state for his politics and so headed to America where he became the voice of the Revolution.
