About this deal

In this article we are going to show you how to create extra storage space in your loft. LOFT BOARD SIZES Please note that we cannot work out quotes for you, please use the information above/in the picture provided by Loft Legs. Turn off the electrical supply. This is because boards are fixed with a drill and so the power must be off in case of drilling into any cables.

A floor in a loft that’s been converted must be designed to carry a minimum of 150kg per square m. This is 5 times more than a loft that’s simply been boarded for storage. As the system is specially made for this job it allows the necessary height to achieve 270mm of insulation plus the all important air gap. NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Ulster Bank, which are all part of the NatWest Group, will now shut at least 172 of their bank branches in 2023 and 2024.

Making Your Loft Floor Boarding as Strong as Possible

With this in mind always take extreme care when working in a loft. It’s often a good idea to lay some loft boards loose over the top of any joists just so you have something solid to stand on and work from. Screwdriver – for removing any existing boards fitted to your ceiling joists, if needed. Opt for a hand screwdriver if there are only a few, or an electric screwdriver or combi drill if there are many Measure the length and width of the loft space to be insulated. Keep all measurements in the same unit – metres (m).

Keep loft insulation a minimum of 75mm away from hot flues (including enclosed chimneys, from a boiler or wood-burning stove)The horizontal rafter, or ceiling joist timbers in your loft are there purely to hold up the ceiling below, not carry weights beyond normal domestic storage items. Types of Loft Boarding and Flooring Step 6 – Add More Insulation: With more depth now created lay an additional layer of the hard insulation between the new joists. Again make cuts tight to avoid any air gaps. Depending on how deep you existing joists are (75mm 3 inch or 100mm 4 inch) will depend how much more you need to lay to reach the overall required depth of 150mm, which will either be 50 or 75mm As with any type of insulation, you need to make sure that the roof is dry and in good condition before adding any insulation. Also, right now many mortgage companies aren’t willing to offer loans for properties with foam insulation in the roof, which can make it very difficult to sell a property with this type of insulation. Lay the insulated loft boards at right angles to the ceiling joists and with the chipboard surface on the top. Ensure that each 1220mm long board is supported across at least three joists. Light fittings of various types are also common in lofts, They will either appear as a wire or collection of wires going down through the ceiling to a ceiling rose or in the case of down lighters, the fitting itself protruding up through the ceiling.

Mark the fixing positions on the board with a pen and drill a countersunk hole through the chipboard only. Some companies may offer to fix your damaged or leaking roof by spraying foam insulation directly onto the underside of the roof without fixing the problem first. We don’t recommend that you do this. Remember not to compress your insulation. If you intend to board directly on to the joists instead of having a raise floor, then start by placing the first board across the joists. In most cases you will be using chipboards for your project. The chipboard soaks up moisture so always leave an air gap between the top of the insulation and the underside of the board to stop the problem of condensation. The gap just needs to be sufficient that no part of the insulation is touching the board. to 18mm diameter wood drill bit - for drilling start holes to cut boards around recessed downlights, as needed

Loftlegs are designed for domestic use only and are not intended for use as a flooring substrate or surface in a permanent living space

Cutting and Screwing Loft Boards and Flooring Panels to Board out the Loft

In the majority of cases lofts are dirty and very dusty. All the dust in the air seeps through the tiles and roofing felt joints to settle on your ceiling. Add to that the dust created by old insulation and you have a pretty unhealthy environment. When it comes to screwing loft boards down, each screw should be countersunk and a pilot hole drilled. Step 6 – Cut Boards to Size: As you have staggered the boards there will now a gap of around a 1/3rd of a board. Measure the gap and then cut a board to this size and then slot it in place, drill and countersink pilot holes and then screw it down. Continue this technique until you have laid all your boards and fixed them in place Insulation guards - also known as heat diffusers, loft caps or loft covers, they protect any recessed light fittings from overheating underneath the insulation. Buy as many as needed. Additionally, the dust created from cutting, drilling etc. High Density Fibreboard such as standard loft boards (especially if you are using MDF boards, where MDF dust has been proven to be carcinogenic) can also be very hazardous to your health.
