About this deal

These have been lifted from the ground while dormant, with little or no soil around their roots. Various plants may be available bare root, including fruit trees, hedging plants and some perennials. They are generally cheaper than plants in containers, but are only available in winter/early spring, while dormant bare-root or root-balled plants, without containers, which tend to be cheaper than plants in containers. They are available mainly from specialist hedging suppliers online. Bare-root plants are available in winter, for immediate planting. Some suppliersalso sell trays of well-rooted cuttings. See our guide to hedging plants. Put in enough soil so that when the root ball rests on it, it reaches to about 3cm below the top of the pot. This makes it easier to water the roots. And it leaves room for you to put some decorative stone on the soil if you wish to cover it up. All Buxus species prefer well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Avoid free-draining sandy soils by adding plenty of manure, and improve clay soils in the same way, making sure to break the soil down well before adding any soil improvers. The fertiliser is best applied in spring as routine fertilisation. A healthy boxwood's uniformly green leaves remain on the plants for three years. However, if the Buxus or other hedging plant is showing symptoms of nitrogen deficiency such as If they begin dropping leaves sooner or if the lower foliage begins yellowing, thinning and deepening to bronze in winter, the plants may be suffering from nitrogen deficiency and fertiliser should be applied.

As well as dense foliage, it is attractive to garden designers and commercial gardeners thanks to its dwarf habit, rarely growing more than a couple of inches a year. 2. Better Buxus Heritage

Box grows wild in Mediterranean garrigue conditions, so can obviously withstand severe drought once the plants are established (see 'water' below). Moist, well-drained conditions produce maximum growth. It will not grow in permanently water-logged soil. Calcium (Ca) in Kiwicare PLANThealth Buxus Feed helps root and shoot development and resistance to Buxus Blight disease.

Therefore, the first step when feeding a box tree is to think about where you are growing it and whether the soil or growing medium in that location is optimal for the health of the variety you are growing. All-purpose fertiliser and tomato feed are the best fertilisers for Buxus. Do boxwoods have invasive roots?

The common name for this board-leaves boxwood is simply Variegated Boxwood, and that’s exactly what it is. Thanks to its large leaves, the variegations are more noticeable, and build up a pattern of dappled tone and colour especially well on tightly clipped examples. The spores that cause it can be spread via the wind, birds and animals, planting material, garden tools, footwear or clothing. Boxwood generally does not need much fertilisation, however, you can feed your container Boxwood once or twice a year to maintain healthy growth. Fungicides for domestic use are available in garden centres and currently the fungicides Bayer Fungus Fighter (tebuconazole) and Bayer Fungus Fighter Plus (tebuconazole and trifloxystrobin) carry label recommendations for use against box blight. Both can be applied without any formal certification but do read and follow the label instructions; For hedging–prepare the planting trench by thoroughly digging over the soil to a spade's depth and up to 90cm (3ft) wide. This will help the roots to spread out easily.
