About this deal

Some people find stevia bitter, but others think it tastes like menthol. Try it in your morning coffee or sprinkled over your oatmeal to see if you like the taste. Stevia Health Benefits Joan Salge Blake, MS, RDN, LDN, clinical associate professor, Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. As a sweetener, monk fruit comes in many forms, including a sugar-like powder and liquid extract. Because it has an extremely sweet flavor – 100 to 250 times sweeter than sugar – monk fruit is often mixed with other ingredients for balance. I’ve used it in my Rich, Delicious and Healthy Coffee Substituteand it can be used to sweeten any beverage.

Anyone who prefers to buy stevia in bulk. This comes in pouches of up to two pounds. If you cook or bake with stevia and use multiple servings at once, buying in bulk may be a better option for you. Stevia can help cut down on added sugar consumption, which could be especially beneficial for children.

One thing I make with Stevia is chocolate granola. I just mix up 4-6 egg whites and about 1/4 – 1/2 cup coconut oil (which is really healthy), next I add Stevia (about 1/4 C or so) and mix thoroughly. Next I add about 4 to 6 cups of oatmeal (I use Bob’s Red Mill Organic that’s made in a gluten free factory), 1 cup or so sliced almonds and shredded coconut. Finally, I start sprinkling in cocoa powder until it’s chocolatey enough (probably around 1/4 – 1/2 cup). You can also add some other spices – like cinnamon or nutmeg – and vanilla or almond extract. When that’s all mixed, spread it in a cookie sheet and bake at around 250 to 300 for 1/2 to 1 hour. While it will stay in clumps, it won’t be like a bar, because there’s not gooey honey or sugar to hold it together. But it tastes really good, like you’re eating a cookie treat. Steviol glycosides, which are refined extracts of stevia like Reb A, are recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meaning that they can be used in food products and marketed in the United States ( 8). As a disclaimer, replacing sugar in your baking is not a straightforward task. Because stevia is around 200 times sweeter than sugar, you’ll need to use much less of any granular stevia while you’re whipping up a sugar-free option for the bake sale. As it stands to reason, using less sweetener by volume will impact the size and shape of what you’re creating. Fortunately, there are a lot of resources out there for stevia-friendly baking recipes. Additional Ingredients Inconvenience. Monk fruit is less common than sugar and can be harder to find when grocery shopping. Also, some people don’t like the process of learning how to bake or cook with monk fruit extract in place of sugar.

As it has zero calories but is 200 times sweeter than table sugar, it’s a popular choice for many people looking to lose weight and decrease sugar intake (( 1, 2, 3, 4). Liquid stevias come in a variety of shapes and sizes. We like a smaller bottle for the convenience and that the bottles are typically equipped with a dropper for ease of use. SweetLeaf Sweet DropsThose who want to sweeten their food, beverages, batters, and more with a liquid instead of a powder they have to stir or mix in. To complicate matters even further, there are a number of different companies that make stevia. The quality, flavor, and sweetness varies from product to product. Your best option is to try a few different brands and choose the one you like best. Some companies combine pure stevia powder with maltodextrin or another filler. While such products are still sweet, they don’t compare in strength to the pure powder. Those who prefer granulated stevia which replicates the feel of mixing traditional sugar into baked goods. I am looking forward to trying this out, as I am using Trader Joes Stevia Extract I will pay attention to the commenters who mentioned using 3/4 tsp for that version of stevia extract (non liquid). Most baking blends on the market contain maltodextrin which is derived from corn in the United states. Some baking blends actually also contain sugar and stevia to attempts to reduce how much sugar is used. I've not found one blend I liked the ingredients on so therefore can not recommend any at this point. The only thing to note about baking blends is they do make baking easier because all you need to replace is the sugar in any recipe you want. It's certainly not the case with using the pure extract or any of the above stevia products I use. Stevia baking blends are NOT the same as the powdered stevia above and should not be used interchangeably.
