About this deal

The plot is fairly simple but really works. Anya Borzakovskaya falls into a hole when skipping school and discovers it is the final resting place of a girl from 90 years ago who happens to still haunt the hole. When a piece of her skeleton makes its way out of the pit in Anya's bag, she is able to travel along. Making a promise to solve Emily-the-ghost's possible murder and bring her bones to peace, she has Emily tag along to help her cheat on tests and try to ensnare the attention of the popular boy (despite his girlfriend being in the picture). Vitriolic Best Buds: Siobhan is Anya's best (human) friend... She just has a funny way of showing it. Then again, Anya's got a funny way of showing it too.

Bastard Boyfriend: Sean turns out to be this when it's revealed that he makes out (possibly even sleeps) with other girls at parties for fun, even when Elizabeth knows about it. a b Duin, Steve (May 1, 2011). "The timely arrival of Vera Brosgol and 'Anya's Ghost' ". The Oregonian. ISSN 8750-1317. Archived from the original on December 8, 2011 . Retrieved August 27, 2019. Tropes show how literature is conceptualized and created and which mixture of elements makes works and genres unique: EVERYONE. People who appreciate an amazing graphic novels. People who like their heroines sarcastic, realistic, flawed and AWESOME. People who have ever looked at someone else’s life and thought they would want to swap. People who would rather scale their school wall than do the bleep test. People who trust Neil Gaiman’s words of wisdom (He called this book a ‘masterpiece’and it truly, honestly, completely is). People who aren’t above using a ghost to cheat on an exam. Scary Teeth: During Anya's final confrontation with her, Emily's teeth turn from normal to razor-sharp for stylistic effect.

Who stars in Anya’s Ghost: Cast List

The main character is a teenage girl named Anya Borzakovskaya, a Russian immigrant living in the United States. Anya feels like an outcast at her private high school. She is self-conscious about her appearance and her family’s Russian heritage, both of which make her hesitant to do anything that will make her stand out. Anya has a close friend named Siobhan with whom she regularly cuts class. She also has a crush on a popular athlete named Sean, but Sean is dating the beautiful Elizabeth and seems to have no idea that Anya exists. Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2015-09-21 13:54:38.537796 Bookplateleaf 0006 Boxid IA1154814 City New York Donor Anya Borzakovskaya is a Russian emigre attending the third-worst private school in her state. Her single mother can't understand the pressures on Anya as she tries to Americanize herself and fit in to the sometimes vicious world of adolescence. Anya and her only friend, Siobhan, spend as much time feuding as they do helping each other out, and then there's Dima, the only other Russian kid in school, who is "fobby" (Fresh off the Boat) and who makes Anya squirm with embarrassment (usually just before he gets clobbered by the more athletic kids). Anya sneaks away from school one day in a dark cloud of frustration and finds herself down a deep hole — with a skeleton.

I get what the author was trying to do and this conclusion came about after a realization Anya has regarding Elizabeth's relationship with her crush, but it came off with the implication that it's acceptable to be mean to people who do have their shit together. Like, don't just act like a decent human being when someone is currently struggling with poor mental health - do so every other time as well, thanks boo boo.

This comic provides examples of:

She Cleans Up Nicely: Emily convinces Anya to dress up and go to Matt's party. This is the result, although Anya wonders if she doesn't look a little "loose-womany". As it turns out her outfit did make her look more attractive, but not in the way she wanted. Sean outright says that Anya looks "really good" on that night in particular as he offers for her to take part in a threesome. As I mentioned, it's the Friday of a three day weekend so I'll keep this short, but Anya's Ghost is a real keeper. Brosgol deftly accomplishes so much in so little space. There is an economy of text but an abundance of meaning. The message is wonderful. The illustrations are engaging. The heroine is spectacular. The more I learned about Anya the more I celebrated the differences she despised. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this book. a b Tree, Brad (September 9, 2012). "Congratulations to the Harvey Award Recipients!". Harvey Awards. Archived from the original on March 15, 2016 . Retrieved February 10, 2023. Hollywood Pudgy: Invoked: Anya is of average weight, but diets stubbornly and sees herself as obese. Anya's Ghost is drawn in what Pamela Paul called a "deep violet palette" [1] that Brosgol called "purpley-blue". The artist herself said she chose the colors "for no other reason than I like purpley-blue and I think it feels right for the story". [10] Susan Carpenter of the Los Angeles Times interpreted the colors as "a subtle underscoring of Anya's bruised ego". [7] Publication [ edit ]
