About this deal

To ensure we can properly compare the performance of all the vacuum cleaners we test, we put them through a barrage of challenging tests. We measure suction to get an idea of how powerful each vacuum is. If they use batteries, we time how long it takes for them to run down. Where the device has more than one power setting, we repeat the tests on them all. Cordless vacuums are on their way to being the only game in town: people love how light and portable they are compared to corded vacuums, especially in flats and small houses. Your mind might automatically cast to Dyson. But cheaper and more widely available, American challengers Shark now rival them in popularity. Flexible hinge, lift-away unit, swappable batteries, LED headlights, dual brush floorhead, anti-hair-wrap floorhead

Switching between carpet and had floors is very easy thanks to the DuoClean brushrolls, which switch over with the touch of a button. It's also possible to go between three power levels, although we found the lowest level perfectly strong enough for the majority of tasks. Battery life If you have a larger home or a lot of carpet, you’ll want more battery life so you don’t get caught short.Shark claims that it has all the power of a corded vacuum cleaner but in cordless form, and after testing we couldn't agree more. It's got DuoClean which makes switching modes immensely straightforward, and the controls make it easy to see how much battery you have left. To charge, simply lift out the battery on the side of the dust tank and pop it into its charging port. One of the attachments which comes with this Shark vacuum is the pet tool. As with many of the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair, it's was excellent at drawing out embedded hair from rugs, blankets and anywhere else your four-legged-friend likes to reside. Overall, this is a strong contender for those looking for a large capacity Shark vacuum that they can rely on. We’ve also tested models from brands such as AEG and Beko that are better known for their big kitchen appliances. This power switch is the reason I’d recommend the V12 to people with pets, ahead of Dyson’s other vacuums. It takes away the need to constantly hold down a button. This makes it easier to swap hands and navigate obstacles like sofas, dog toys and feeding bowls. All this is especially effective with the hair screw attachment which comes included in the price. (Standard cleaning heads are often defeated by long pet hairs.) It delivered pretty consistent results on the flooring, leaving carpet – including on the stairs – tiles, and parquet clean. The DuoClean floorhead had a big part to play in this as it can easily transition across the various floor types, on which its twin bristle brushes work their magic. Anti Hair Wrap – a feature designed to stop hair accumulating around the brush roll – had some impressive results, too. This meant that neither human hair nor the hair of small furry housemates lodged itself around the brushes of the floorhead or the motorised pet tool.

DuoClean: Shark’s DuoClean motorised floor heads have two rollers. The first is a soft roller designed to capture dirt from a hard floor. The second is a brush roller, which agitates carpet pile for deeper cleaning. Our buyer’s guide to the best vacuum cleaners explains the complicated matter of measuring suction, but as a rough guide, look for a 600W motor or higher. And, very importantly, remember to empty the receptacle as regularly as possible: a bag or cyclone cylinder filled to the brim with pet hair will drastically reduce the vacuum’s suction power. These features can make a difference to how pleasant the vacuum is to use, but which brand you prefer depends on what your biggest vacuuming bugbears are, the size and shape of your home, and how big your budget is.

Shark produces some of the best vacuum cleaners around, but which one is best for you?

A good pet vacuum needs special attachments for removing pet hair, which can be finer than human hair, making it more likely to cling to fabrics due to static electricity. Hair can also easily clog the bristles of a standard vacuum cleaner head, reducing its ability to sweep up dirt. Capacity and emptying If you have a larger home or are prone to allergies, you may be grateful for a bigger or easier-to-empty bin. If you find your vac gets tangled easily with hair, a simple-to-clean brush bar is key for maintaining good suction. The relatively new innovation to Shark's portfolio is Flexology which allows the wand to go from straight to angled, is a feature which we highly rate. It means that you can get your vac under the beds and various items of furniture that are raised up on legs. What we found, however, is that the floorhead wasn’t as easy to direct accurately as is the case when it’s used with the rigid wand. They also have a dust-ejection system designed to minimise dust-clouds, and a larger capacity, which means fewer trips to the bin.
