Starting on the left side, fold the shirt lengthwise in a series of accordion folds. I made each fold about 3.5 inches wide. (You can make wider sections if you like.) Tie dye is a process of tying an dyeing fabric into patterns. The fabric is usually cotton though other fabric such as bamboo, rayon, viscose, modal and linen can also be used. The fabric is folded into a pattern and bound with strings and rubber bands. The dyes are applied to different sections of the damp material. In this example we are creating an arched rainbow, however, you can also make the lines straight in any angle on the shirt. As long they are even spaced out, the rainbow pattern will come through well. Dyeing The Shirt Once you have finished applying the dye, you need to give it time to set or “process.” For the best results, let the dye sit for a minimum of 8 hours, ideally 24 hours. While the dye sets, keep the fabric damp and relatively warm – at least 70°F (21°C). To create a three-color spiral tie-dye pattern, fold and bind the fabric as described in the instructions above. Then, apply the three colors of dye in sections, as follows. Secure the shirt with 3 or 4 rubber bands, crisscrossing them over the center of the disc. The tighter you bind the shirt, the more white areas there will be.
