About this deal

One aspect of this book that I really loved was experiencing different islands while Amora and her crew were on their journey. In the first book, it was hard for me to grasp the magical affinities of each island, but it did not feel as important this time around. With Amora's new law that anyone can practice any magic they wish, learning the designated magics of each island did not seem as necessary. It was very fun experiencing the people and scenery of each destination, and I wish there was more of that in this book. Amabons, ginnada, and dresses from the finest fabrics, all to woo the impressionable princess they believe I am. Boys in the kingdom think they can buy my love and title, and I let them believe it. Nothing can compare to the lavish trinkets of hungry suitors, and I’m not keen on ending their generosity. And our heroine, Amora, she's a real piece of work, this one. Once again, the immature, bratty, know it all Hermione Granger typecast, holier than thou but still edgy warrior princess character gets to be mean and pushy and naïve but somehow gets every potential suitor to fall in love with her? She pushes people and constantly has snarky comments that are uncalled for. She tells her poor poor wet towel of a fiancé that she will never love him right in front of the guys she's been openly flirting with, completely embarrassing him and giving zero f**ks. First, let it be known that this is in no way a ‘bad book'. The writing was decent. The characters are likable. The plot is engaging enough. But I’ve definitely read this book before. Many, many times. And I’m sure you have too.

Mira offers me a cloak that looks as though it’s been drenched in melted sapphires and dusted with starlight. She hooks it to my gown, just below the shoulders, and my breath catches. It glistens like the sun reflecting off dark water and stains my fingertips with shimmer as I brush them across the soft fabric.

All the Tides of Fate was just as good as All the Stars and Teeth. In fact, there are some aspects of the book that made me like it even MORE than All the Stars and Teeth. For example, the development of the various characters in the story. I remember the moment I got the phone call and I just sobbed and I was incoherent. I was just like, "I got to go call my mom!" I think that, as a female specifically, you’re judged a little bit harsher than your male colleagues. And there are more expectations in terms of communicating with people or being kind. There’s just this added social pressure. But for the most part, I try to ignore it because it’s just so exciting and I’m just so grateful to have this opportunity to finally be doing what I’ve worked for for years and years. But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stowaway she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever. THE ROMANCE was cute and fun to follow but definitely PG-13. I think their relationship will likely grow a lot more in the sequel as they've both gone through a lot in this book.

I also fully ship Amora and Bastien and think they make a good couple. I was sad that Amora was pushing Bastien away because of the soul bond. It wasn't his fault and he was so eager to help her and be there for her. His love for Amora was beyond sweet and Bastien is a great guy. Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice. She will reign. As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer — the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic. When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic. But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder — and more peril — than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever. I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom. All the Stars and Teeth (All the Stars and Teeth #1) by Adalyn Grace – eBook DetailsI wrote this, so I'm definitely going to go ahead and mark this as read for my goodreads challenge. Sadly after reading All the Tides of Fate I feel like it should perhaps have been a standalone, it was good enough that it could have done. Because book two for me was just disappointing. The ocean’s brine coats my tongue and I savor its grit. Late summer’s heat has beaten the sea into submission; it barely sways as I stand against the starboard ledge. This is a very standard and well done YA novel, but as someone that leans more towards adult lately, it wasn't amazing for me.

Tonight, I’ve only one chance to prove I’m fit to claim the title of Animancer—a master of souls. But my people won’t settle for a good performance. They demand excellence, and I’ll give them just that. By the end of the night, I’ll prove to them there will never be anyone better suited for the throne. If there's one truth I know, it's that I will make things right for my kingdom. That is my fate, and I will do whatever I must to see it through. Absolutely nothing! - I thought really hard and I could not think of one thing I didn't like about this book. Where are we headed?” I ask. “To the volcanos of Valuka? The jungles of Suntosu?” The weather is gentle enough that my words carry to the bow where Father stands, overlooking the water.

Did we miss something on diversity?

Though Yuriel and I are both Montaras, our similarities end at the blood in our veins. With a father who is pale as powdered snow, my cousin’s skin is several shades lighter than my own copper brown. And while my hair is a mass of dark curls, his, like all things in his hometown of Ikae, is extravagant. It’s the starkest shade of white, pure even at the roots. Where I’m tall and curved with muscle, he’s soft and delicate—a poster child for Ikae. Tighten the grip of your left hand.” Father’s voice is distant, but I do as he says. The ship creaks in response. On the other hand, we have heroines like Celaena Sardothien, supposedly exceptional assassins who fail to dispose of their targets. And of course, we readers can't judge them because THEY'RE THE CHOSEN ONES. This book gave birth to another Celaena, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes. The biggest obstacle for me, however, was the writing style. ALL THE STARS AND TEETH is written in that overly ornate style that feels really forced to me and I couldn't get into it at all. I tried to find a passage to illustrate what I mean and I think this one kind of shows what I'm talking about: All the Stars and Teeth is about a princess, Amora, whose family alone possesses powerful soul magic.
