If culture bottles are incubated for a longer period of time, fewer cultures can be processed in each instrument, thus increasing the need for additional instruments. I believe that incubation for less than 5 days is not justified because a small number of significant pathogens will likely not be detected (e.g., Aggregatibacter, Bartonella, Francisella, Campylobacter, Cryptococcus, Candida glabrata, rapidly growing mycobacteria). Furthermore, the microbiologist should be willing to extend the incubation period for selected cultures at the request of the infectious disease specialist.
