Use scientific terms such as solid and liquid and describe the textures of what you are making. Whilst cooking, children will hear and develop new vocabulary, for example ingredients they may not have heard of and skills they have not used before such as “peel”, “sieve”, “whisk” and “combine”. These opportunities will support your child learning and using new words. While cooking with your child, you can help them to understand the origin of the food on their plate, for example do they know that carrots grow in the ground or that cheese is made from milk? The recipes that you will find in ‘Cooking with Buzz’ come from all over the world, providing you with the opportunity to find out about different cultures and countries as well!

Whilst you encourage your child to explore, test their boundaries and use their imaginations they are learning about risk and how to implement effective control measures to keep themselves and others around them safe. Safety with Buzz will provide you with guidance, experiences ideas and top tips to help you do this. UP and Active with Buzz is a physical programme designed specifically for Busy Bees to support children with their physical skills and development. At the centres, educators have access to a range of physical experiences they can carry out with the children, along with professional reading to support their understanding of physical development. At home, parents are able to access UP and Active experiences to further support their children's gross motor development and fitness. Below you will find a small selection of these experiences!Collect together some of your child's toys or items of interest, space these out on the floor to create a crawling course for your child. Developed in partnership with speech and language advisors ICAN, our bespoke programme supports your child’s communication and language skills in nursery and at home, including supporting those with communication difficulties. Children become aware of their bodies in relation to the space around them. Exercise improves a child's overall health and fitness and supports energy levels. Being active contributes to reducing the risk of childhood obesity. As children use their muscles to perform a task or skill, they build by muscle and cardio endurance, allowing them to carry out skills for longer periods of time. As children maintain their attention during physical experiences, their concentration is enhanced which increases productivity and success. Physical opportunities help children to feel good about themselves and can help to elevate their mood. When we exercise, our bodies release hormones called endorphins; the body's way of helping us feel great! Children who can walk on their own should be physically active for at least 180 minutes (3 hours) throughout the day. This should be both indoors and outdoors, ensuring children receive a balance of light activities as well as energetic activities.

Being able to classify objects by concepts like size, shape and colour creates a solid foundation for children to add new information to existing understanding so learning becomes easierBeing able to follow directions is an essential skill that children need for when they start school. Following a recipe is a great way for children to learn how to follow a set of directions to achieve a planned result.
