Recommended: Poochons have risen to popularity following the designer dog craze in the 90s. Demand increased for small dogs that suit family and urban living and the Poochon was the natural choice for breeders looking to combine popular pedigree breeds. One trait that most sighthounds have in common is that they expend their energy in short bursts of high-energy running or sprinting, but are generally very sedentary the rest of the time. When it comes to boosters it's best to discuss these with a vet because there is a lot of debate about whether a dog really needs them after a certain time. However if a dog ever needed to go into kennels their vaccinations would need to be What about Lurchers when they reach their golden years? The main intention of creating the lurcher dog breed was to take the instincts of a sighthound and improve them by combining them with a more intelligent dog. The resulting animal would be able to chase bunnies, hares, deer, or game birds, and hunt them more efficiently. Lurcher crosses are incredibly intelligent and well-tempered dogs. They inherit the best of both parent breeds, with the mild manner of Sighthound breeds being typical for them. They are very affectionate and make excellent family dogs. They are also very easy to train, all the more so if they are trained early in life.

That said, some Lurchers will have less appetite for exercise – it just depends on the breeding. Even so, a lazy Lurcher shouldn’t be left to its own devices and should be encouraged to be active. The most commonly seen colours include the following: Synonyms: R. lateralis is closely related to R. tigrinus but genetically distinct. Some authors treat it as synonym of tigrinus but more recent authors tend to treat it as valid. Barbour, Thomas 1909. Notes on Amphibia and Reptilia from Eastern Asia. Proc. New England zool. Lifespan: So how long do lurchers live? Depending upon the size of the dog, the lurcher lifespan can be an average of 13 to 15 years. This can be shortened dramatically by the occurrence of health problems such as aggressive cancers. Lurcher Care Lurchers are relatively easy to maintain dogs when it comes to grooming. Having one greyhound or whippet parent put a significant dent in the lengths of their fur. As a result, being brushed once or at the maximum twice a week is more than enough for them, even the long haired lurchers. Zhao, E.M. 2006. The snakes of China [in Chinese]. Hefei, China, Anhui Sience & Technology Publ. House, Vol. I, 372 pp., Vol. II (color plates), 280 pp. Lurchers are a "crossbreed" with their parent breeds typically being the Terrier Collie or Sheepdog crossed with the Greyhound. The dictionary describes a Lurcher as being a hunting dog that's often used by "hunters and poachers" although this is not the case at all. A Lurcher is an all-purpose hunting dog and is the result of crossing a sight hound with a pastoral breed of dog and they are not only popular with hunters but they are highly regarded as family pets and companions too. All Lurcher puppies would have been wormed before being sold but it's important to keep worming them at regular intervals to ensure they stay healthy. The worming schedule to follow is as follows:weeks old bearing in mind that a puppy would not have full protection straight away but would be fully protected 2 weeks after they have had their second vaccination lurcher, n.4. Oxford English Dictionary, online edition. Oxford: Oxford University Press. (subscription required). Unfortunately there are no genetic tests or screening available for Lurchers when it comes to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) which affects larger dogs and more especially Lurchers with Deerhound in their lineage. The condition sees a dog's heart becoming enlarged and it tends to affect dogs when they are middle-aged. More about gastric torsion
