Book Review | Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney - READ TO RAMBLE Book Review | Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney - READ TO RAMBLE

The ending of this book blew my mind. It’s definitely one of the more literary mystery’s I’ve read, but I really enjoyed Daisy’s narration. “And then there were none” was a fav of mine, & I enjoyed it The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. Then at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows . . . Since Daisy is born with a heart condition, she repeatedly refers to herself as "broken." This is stated over and over throughout the story, in the most pitiful and woe-is-me way. Since I read the physical copy, I can't do a search for how many times the word "broken" is used, but it wouldn't surprise me if the answer is hundreds of times. At least that's the way it feels. Frank: a composer devoted to music more than his family, a selfish man whose career always comes first, abandoning his wife, forgetting children’s birthday, messing around. Clever, sinister, claustrophobic, beguiling and utterly compelling. I was totally hooked from the first sentence.”Lily, the middle child, is their mother’s favorite. She lives with Mom and her daughter, Trixie-the-heir-apparent, but doesn’t have a job or much in the way of prospects. She always wanted whatever Rose had and found Daisy to be a pain. Don’t waste your life wishing to be like someone else, decide who you are and be you.” was sage advice from Nana to Daisy. How can you apply this advice to your own life? Isn’t this what we try to impart to our kids all of the time? Be your own person. Be your best self, your own self, and love who you are. In my opinion, the best part of this book will be the one-liners (which we never usually expect in thrillers) told by the characters in multiple parts of this book. I think there are more than fifty one-liners in this book. I found each one informative, and these pearls of wisdom are placed in correct intervals and correct areas in the most effective way by the author. I will share a few of them here. But Conor said that Daisy would have died soon anyway, because of her heart condition. He suggested they cover up their involvement by throwing Daisy over the cliff. Rose and Lily agree that this is the only choice. They fling her off the edge of the cliff into the sea.

Book Review: Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney - Criminal Element Book Review: Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney - Criminal Element

May just be her crowning achievement…In a modern take on And Then There Were None, Alice Feeney presents twist after twist after twist.” Why is this interesting? The first murder in the book happens around high tide, meaning that the Darker family is trapped in the house, cut off from civilization, for the next six hours. In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.” What was the draw of the isolated island location? How did it contribute to the story? The locale was everything. Aside from being integral to the plot (no one could get on or off), the isolation fostered extreme camaraderie between its inhabitants over the years. Conor goes upstairs but calls down to say he found no one. Rose turns off the lights in the library and the three of them wait. Victims #6 and #7: Conor and Rose Maybe it was all of the pent up emotion of dragging out a book I've been waiting so long to read and then having such a satisfying and riveting ending, maybe it was simply the plot itself, my connection to these characters in such a short period of time, or some combination of all of these elements. All I know is, I can't even remember the last time THIS sort of book made me feel THAT sort of way!

Trixie says that despite her heart condition, she hopes to live to twenty-five and wants to travel the world. Daisy is wearing childish clothes because those are the clothes she wore the day that she died. Nana wanted Daisy to write her own story. Daisy uses Conor’s computer to start writing her story. Daisy is twisty, loaded with gloomy atmosphere, and what’s more fun than watching a family rip each other to bits? It’s like Christmas in August.”After catching a glimpse of an early NetGalley review for this title, I was worried that a reviewer who decided to give somewhat of the 'gist' of the big twist in their review had ruined this for me. Having a feeling of what was going on didn't make this as intense as some of the other Feeney books I've read for sure, but I was so swept up in the atmospheric world of Seaglass that I was more than willing to wait it out. Daisy Darker was a pleasure to read. It felt a bit lighter (ha!) than the usual Alice Feeney book, a little less disturbing and a little more like the classic mysteries I grew up reading (and love!) Alice Feeney FILLS her books with tiny details and I’m sure I won’t get them all, so PLEASE add your thoughts in comments. If I add them to the post I will credit you!
